When The Clone Wars cartoon hit theaters in 2008 it was met with a huge toy line push which only continued to grow stronger in the following two years. The animated series, which came to an end last year with its Season 7, introduced a set of new characters to fans and a new animated style of figure for collectors. The proceeding Clone Wars line based on the micro-series also had a line of hyper-animated figures but it was nothing compared to the mega-hit TCW eventually became. No Star Wars animated property (Droids, Ewoks, Clone Wars, Rebels & Resistance) even when combined can match the massive line that The Clone Wars series produced. The Clone Wars action figure line came to be around the time of the height of 3 3/4″ Star Wars collecting. This scale, which is now referred to by Hasbro as the “Heritage Scale”, was the go-to and default scale for Star Wars action figures for 35 years.

With Star Wars: The Bad Batch debuting next week on May the Fourth, and as it is the direct sequel to The Clone Wars, we wanted to look back on the number of basic (single carded) figures that have been produced in each figure line since the film’s debut and the 2008 Toys ‘R’ Us Midnight Madness event which kicked off the fan-favorite figure line.

Below you will find a quick checklist of each single carded figure released which is based upon a Clone Wars character. This does not include any characters released in deluxe, multipacks, vehicles, playsets, or mail aways. The reason for this is, an action figure line’s backbone is typically based on the number of basic figures it has. And the more popular the property or the more interested the producer is in promoting the property can easily be seen by the number of basic figures in a series.

As you can see, The Clone Wars hit its’ stride in 2010-2011. During this time, of the almost 200 basic carded TCW figures released to date, 65 of them or 34% were released in the Shadows of the Dark Side series. After this line is when figures for the animated series began to decline and take a back seat before disappearing altogether during the Sequel Trilogy years.

One of the first things Disney did upon purchasing the Star Wars franchise was to cancel The Clone Wars with Season 5.  This then was compounded by the cancelation of Episodes II and III in 3D to which The Clone Wars toy line was still connected. This forced the last few waves of animated style figures to be released exclusively outside of the United States. Like many toy lines at the end of their run, the figures from these final waves are scarce and can be pricey on the secondary market.

The final figure to be released in animated form was CW09: Battle Droid from the “Yoda” line. We are now eight years since then and not a single animated style figure has been announced despite The Bad Batch sequel series is just days away. One of the reasons for this is that both The Black Series and The Vintage Collection have branded themselves as collector lines and will only release figures in realistic styles and sculpts.

In 2015, Disney began their release of yearly Star Wars movies and the pace of a large amount of content was more than Hasbro could keep up with in terms of producing new figures based on all of the new films. This caused Hasbro to abandon The Clone Wars completely for five whole years in which they did not produce a single original Clone Wars-based figure. We use the term original because there was a single reissue released in 2016; Ahsoka Tano in the Wal*Mart exclusive 3 3/4″ Black Series line.

Now we couldn’t end this article without mentioning the fact that the 2008 Clone Wars packaging is making a return to store shelves as part of the Lucasfilm 50th Anniversary line. Unfortunately for 3 3/4″ collectors, this packaging is coming only to the 6″ Black Series as a Target exclusive subline. This follows in the footsteps of the recently released Episode One 6″ line featuring the iconic 1999 3 3/4″ packaging.

As always, we will keep our fingers crossed for more new Clone Wars figures in the heritage scale and we are always hopeful that events like next week’s May the 4th Livestream event by Hasbro Pulse might just start to fill in those character holes fans of the animated series have been pining for. And for the second, Hasbro if you are listening, we would love not just the return of packaging TCW but new figures and characters using the animated style and we’d even love to see them in their own line, separate from The Vintage Collection.

Until May the 4th Day 2021, may the Figures be with you!
