Star Wars Rebels

The days leading up to Toy Fair 2014 brought a couple of media exclusive reveals for Star Wars Rebels:

Originally debuting on tvguide.com:

Originally debuting on usatoday.com:

This brought the total number of figures previewed to four.  Stormtrooper (implied on packaging), The Inquisitor, C1-10P “Chopper” and Kanan:

On Saturday morning Hasbro held their presentation which brought both expected figure reveals and a few surprises as well.  The following is from their official press release.

The STAR WARS saga gains a thrilling new chapter in 2014 with the release of STAR WARS REBELS, an all-new animated series set in the largely unexplored time period between EPISODE III and EPISODE IV. To celebrate this groundbreaking new series, which follows the motley crew of the starship Ghost as they struggle against the evil Galactic Empire, Hasbro is launching two exciting toy lines in 2014.

The STAR WARS REBELS line features a wide range of action figures, vehicles and role-plays toy directly based on the animation, and includes Rebel heroes like EZRA, KANAN, and ZEB as well as evil villains like the INQUISITOR and AGENT KALLUS.

STAR WARS® REBELS SAGA LEGENDS 3.75-INCH Action Figures
(Ages: 4 & up/ Approximate retail price: $5.99/ Available: Fall 2014)
The cast of the new animated series STAR WARS REBELS comes to life in toy form in this line of new Hasbro action figures! Each STAR WARS REBELS SAGA LEGENDS 3.75-inch action figure includes five points of articulation and show-accurate accessories. Choose from all new STAR WARS REBELS characters like EZRA, INQUISITOR, and KANAN as well as other iconic characters from the STAR WARS saga! Each character sold separately.

Ezra and Stormtrooper were two figures we expected to be released and shown but Agent Kallus with his unique helmet and blaster was a nice reveal.  All of these figures will be part of the Star Wars Rebels Saga Legends line.  The Saga Legends moniker now lets up know that they will be kid focused and have the reduced 5 points of articulation (5POA).

STAR WARS® REBELS 3.75-Inch Vehicles
(Ages: 4 & up/ Approximate retail price: $24.99/ Available: Fall 2014)
Build your galactic fleet with iconic STAR WARS vehicles as well as all-new ships from the new animated series STAR WARS REBELS like the PHANTOM and the INQUISITOR’S TIE ADVANCED PROTOTYPE. These 3.75-inch scale, exceptionally detailed vehicles are compatible with 3.75-inch STAR WARS REBELS action figures (sold separately). Each sold separately.

Two of the three vehicles previewed had already been know to those following the development of the animated series.  Both the Rebel ship The Phantom and the Imperial’s AT-DP are nice and classic feeling additions to the Star Wars vehicle library, but it was The Inquisitor’s Advanced TIE Starfighter that had never been shown before.  The Jedi hunter’s starfighter appears to be a predecessor to Lord Vader’s Advanced x1 TIE Fighter.  (Image taken by the fine folks at GalacticHunter.com)

One ship that was absent from the presentation was the main ship of the series: The Ghost.  Now hearing that The Phantom is supposed to dock with The Ghost, it is our guess that this ship will be announced at San Diego Comic-Con for a Christmas time release, as this is the season when larger ships typically make their way to retail.

The Ghost was not the only vehicle fans were wanting to see but did not.  The Imperial Transport based on the vintage Kenner toy and announced by Pablo Hildago at New York Comic-Con was also nowhere to be seen.

STAR WARS® REBELS MISSION SERIES 3.75-INCH Action Figures
(Ages: 4 & up/ Approximate retail price: $9.99/ Available: Fall 2014)
Team up characters or pit them against each other with these awesome 2-figure packs, featuring heroes and villains from the Star Wars saga and from the new animated series, STAR WARS REBELS! Each pair of figures highlights an epic rivalry or a classic partnership. Each pack is sold separately and includes two figures with five points of articulation and accessories.

The Mission Series 2-packs will be branching into the Rebels line as well.  The two sets from the animated series include Zeb (based on McQuarrie’s Chewbacca concept) & Stormtrooper and R2-D2 & C-3PO who apparently will be making an appearance in the show.  This would mean that the famous droid pair will have appeared in 4 out of the 5 animated Star Wars programs (and yes we are counting The Holiday Special).

Saga Legends

The next few waves of the Saga Legends line were officially announced.  All four figures in the wave have previously been leaked and no other figures were shown.  Wave 1 of 2014 consists of SL13 Obi-Wan Kenobi and SL14 Luke Skywalker.

Wave 2 of 2014 includes SL15 Darth Maul and SL16 Snowtrooper,

Other Mission Series 2-packs in addition to the Rebels sets shown include the Episode III themed Darth Sidious & Yoda set which if the mock-up at Toy Fair is correct will be using the Stormtrooper Rebels packaging but without the Rebels title.  The other sets that will proceed the packaging change are MS08 Obi-Wan Kenobi & General Grievous and MS09 Luke Skywalker & Darth Vader.

No additional vehicles beyond the second wave of Class II Attack Vehicles were mentioned.  The second wave which should be appearing in stores soon are:

  • Anakin’s Jedi Starfighter (The Clone Wars – yellow)
  • Boba Fett’s Slave 1
  • Obi-Wan’s Jedi Starfighter (Episode III – blue)

 The Black Series

When it came to The Black Series figures, it appears that Hasbro is choosing for the moment to put more energy in their 6″ line as they announced deluxe figures and vehicles in addition to the line’s next few waves.

STAR WARS is forever, and Hasbro celebrates the enduring legacy of the brand in 2014 with new introductions in its incredibly successful BLACK SERIES action figure line. Launched in 2013 as the ultimate toy line for STAR WARS collectors, the STAR WARS THE BLACK SERIES proved a massive hit and returns in 2014 with new 3.75-inch and 6-inch scale action figures and a thrilling first—THE BLACK SERIES 6-inch Deluxe action figures, featuring creatures and vehicles in-scale with the 6-inch figures!

STAR WARS® THE BLACK SERIES 3.75-Inch Action Figures

(Approximate retail price: $9.99; Ages: 4 & up; Available: Spring 2014)

Complementing the 6-inch STAR WARS BLACK SERIES collection is the 3.75-inch BLACK SERIES figure assortment which features the exceptionally accurate detail and superb articulation customary to HASBRO’s action figures. New figures in 2014 include LUKE SKYWALKER, YODA, SNOWTROOPER COMMANDER, TORYN FARR, DARTH VADER and WEDGE ANTILLES. Each sold separately.

Despite their heavy focus on the 6″ line, what they did show for their smaller line of figures was very cool indeed.

Wave 1 of 2014 includes: Yoda (Jedi Trials), Luke Skywalker (Jedi Trials), Snowtrooper Commander, Toryn Farr

Wave 2 of 2014 is set to include:

  • The rumored Ree-Yees was confirmed and is getting his much overdue update.
  • Luke Skywalker in Hoth Gear is a great looking figure but has seen multiple releases even as recently in The Vintage Collection line.
  • R5-G19 is a figure that we believe appeared in Return of the Jedi but have yet to confirm this as the droid is not even listed in the comprehensive online encyclopedia Wookieepedia.

r5

(UPDATE 3:38PM: The Astromech Collection has confirmed that this particular R5 unit did not make the final cut of Return of the Jedi.  It is essentially a cut-scene character and was in the briefing room on Home One.  The two on the left had screen time but R5-G19 was left on the cutting room floor.  Pic from The Astromech Collection)

  • Sgt. Doallyn is a bit of a confusing figure as it is believed to actually be Brock Starsher yet he resembles the previously released Bane Malar and all were under the employ of one Jabba the Hutt.  Although Starsher and Doallyn share the same helmet, Starsher was the one seen in the skiff scenes and Doallyn was tossed down the stair by Chewbacca.  Stay tuned as we research who this figure truly represents.

(UPDATE 9:20AM: Tim Veekhoven confirms that this is indeed Brock Starsher as Sgt. Doallyn wears a black shirt and Starsher wears white.)

  • The Rebellion’s only successful pilot (remember even Luke was shot down) Wedge Antilles was shown sporting his Snowspeeder suit.  This marks only the second time that he has been depicted in his Echo Base gear and also the second time he has been released on a single non-exclusive cardback.
  • Darth Vader returns to The Black Series although this specific release is meant to depict his Episode III appearance.

Not shown but apparently seen and confirmed at London’s Toy Fair a few weeks ago was an Ahsoka Tano and Hoth Han in Brown coat figure.

The Black Series packaging was shown to be getting a makeover with a TIE Pilot theme.  This will coincide with the Star Wars Rebels packaging which also will feature an Imperial helmet focused design.  (Image by GalacticHunter.com)

Hero Series?

STAR WARS HERO SERIES X WING A8798One of the out-of-nowhere reveals was information about a new large scale X-Wing which is being released but appears to not be compatible with either the 3 3/4″ or the 6″ line of figures.  We believe that this is meant to be a companion piece to the 12″ series of figures and where its clearly not in scale with this series its similar in regards to the fact that its a larger scaled version than has ever been done before.

STAR WARS® HERO SERIES X-WING FIGHTER Vehicle
(Ages: 4 & up/ Approximate retail price: $39.99/ Available: Fall 2014)
One of the most iconic STAR WARS vehicles of all time, in a totally new scale that has to be seen to be believed! The massive STAR WARS HERO SERIES X-WING FIGHTER is ready for even bigger battles, and is sure to become a collection centerpiece for kids and collectors alike!

The Clone Wars

anakin-rex-netflix-mdtoutWhile other than this week’s announcement that 13 episodes from Season 6’s The Lost Missions and all 1-5 seasons of The Clone Wars will begin streaming on Netflix on March 7th, Hasbro did announce that they would be celebrating this by releasing two clones from the Season 6 bonus content later on in The Black Series 3 3/4″ line.  This is great news for fans of the series as there might now be hope that Hasbro could continue occasionally placing TCW figs in The Black Series line in the future.

Well we must say that Toy Fair did not fail in introducing us to product which will be keeping up busy and broke throughout 2014.  Now of course no retailer exclusives were previewed at the show which is typically the case, so expect those once convention season begins again.  From the look of things, it seems that Hasbro is back loading a large amount of its Star Wars product due to the Fall release of Rebels.  From 4-LOM to Zuckuss plans on saving now in order to not be overwhelmed in the Fall.

One final item of possible note.  An image surfaced (which can be seen here) at Toy Fair from Star Wars Rebels which featured an unnamed Rebel in an over sized Mandalorian helmet.  Note the belt, the orange skin, the obscured name and the fact that SHE was not introduced at Toy Fair.  The horns in a helmet seem a little unlikely but who knows we may just see the return of our favorite Padawan yet.

(UPDATE 12:06PM: The Mandolorian was revealed today to be a new character Sabine.  For a pic check out JediNews.co.uk)
