On August 30th, 2020, Hasbro released a line of “customizable droids” at Target stores across the country as part of their exclusive Galaxy’s Edge Trading Post merchandise launch. This small line included both Astromech and BB Unit droids and used Hasbro’s original Build-a-Droid body that was used with their past BAD figures. The Astromech molds were also used to kick off the “Droid Factory” concept which is now exclusive to Disney Parks. Those who have been collecting the Disney Park Droid Factory line since its inception in 2012, know that Disney around the time of the Sequel Trilogy replicated the Hasbro BAD mold with subtle and slight changes. We point this out because even though the Droid Depot line is associated with Disney’s Galaxy’s Edge theme park, it does not use the Disney BAD molds.

Below you will find a complete breakdown of this line in the very spirit of our Disney’s Droid Factory Build-a-Droid Guide.

Astromech Droids

Astromech droids are a series of versatile utility robots generally used for the maintenance and repair of starships and related technology. The R2 unit is a popular example of an astromech droid.

Astromech Droid (White and Purple) – August 2020

This classic R2 Astromech with purple panels is like all of the Droid Depot droids in the line, they are ironically all original concepts and not actually based on any of the droids that can be found in either park. Therefore we guestimated, with a little creativity from our time spent in Galaxy’s Edge, what their backstories might be.

  • R2 Domes (1 version)

  •  R2 Bodies (1 version)

  • Astromech Accessories (2 versions)

R2 (Purple & White) – This R2 Astromech Droid with its serving tray can most likely be found slinging drinks in Oga’s Cantina on Batuu.

This figure retailed exclusively at Target for $9.99.

Astromech Droid (Red and White) – August 2020

This red and white Astromech requires an additional purchase if collectors are wanting to display both domes. While it bears similar colors to the Coca-Cola-themed droids in the park, it is actually the reverse opposite when it comes to the white and red of the droids.

  • R2 Domes (1 version)

  • R5 Domes (1 version)

  • R2 Bodies (1 version)

R2 (Red) – While not officially employed this red and white R2 Droid can be found attempting to sell carbonated beverages to the visitors of the Black Spire’s Trading Post.

R5 (White) – This R5 unit, when not experiencing a bad motivator, likes to follow the carbonated beverage carts around Batuu in the hopes of one day gaining employment with them.

This figure retailed exclusively at Target for $9.99.

Astromech Droid (Black and Orange) – August 2020

The third Astromech set carries a black and orange paint scheme and is the only one to feature rocket boosters, which were initially made famous by R2-D2 in Episode 2 (and in a cut sequence from The Phantom Menace before that). Now of note is that this Astromech has a clear dome (which normally is what R3 droids have) but the dome included is clearly an R2 and not an R3 dome.

  • R2 Domes (1 version)

  • R2 Bodies (1 version)

  • Astromech Accessories (2 versions)

R2 (Black & Orange) – This droid’s favorite time of the year on Batuu is when it gets to hang with BOO Droids.

This figure retailed exclusively at Target for $9.99.

BB Units

Rolling about the hanger bays of outposts and capital ships, or snug in the sockets of X-wing fighters, BB units work tirelessly to keep the weapons and vessels of the Resistance in top combat condition!

BB Units (Blue and White) – August 2020

The molds for both the BB-8s and BB-9s in this subline are based on The Last Jedi sculpts and do not have a peg hole like The Force Awakens BB Units do. In each of the Droid Depot BB Unit sets, Hasbro chose to switch the traditional pairings of domes and bodies when it comes to these Sequel Trilogy ball droids. Apparently, on Batuu, it is common to see BB-8 domes on BB-9 bodies and vice versa.

  • BB-8 Domes (1 version)

  • BB-9 Domes (1 version)

  • BB-8 Bodies (1 version)

  • BB-9 Bodies (1 version)

BB-8 (White) – This BB-8 droid fancies the medical droids of Batuu.

BB-9 (Blue) – This ball droid spends his time liberally helping those in need throughout The Black Spire.

This set retailed exclusively at Target for $9.99.

BB Units (Red and Black) – August 2020

This set includes the only reused piece from the line as the Red BB Unit shares the exact same head with the Blue BB Unit from the previous set. Now since each of the domes and bodies is switched in the BB Unit line, it begs the question, “is a ball droid’s name based off its dome or its body?” For the sake of this visual guide, we are using the domes to designate the overall type of droid.

  • BB-8 Domes (1 version)

  • BB-9 Domes (1 version)

  • BB-8 Bodies (1 version)

  • BB-9 Bodies (1 version)

BB-8 (Black) – In the employ of the First Order, this ball droid is constantly on the lookout for Resistance spies on Batuu.

BB-9 (Red) – This droid conserves its time away from his brother BB-9 (Blue) by looking over the businesses within the Trading Post.

This set retailed exclusively at Target for $9.99.

BB Units (White and Purple) – August 2020

This set includes a BB-9 dome which is very similar to the dome of BB-9E, the evil First Order droid who served aboard Supreme Leader Snoke’s Mega-Class Star Destroyer, The Supremacy.

  • BB-8 Domes (1 version)

  • BB-9 Domes (1 version)

  • BB-8 Bodies (1 version)

  • BB-9 Bodies (1 version)

BB-8 (Purple) – This BB Unit is such a fan of the stories Dok Ondar tells about the ancient Jedi Masters that he had has hull colored in tribute to the Jedi Master Mace Windu.

BB-9 (White) – While altering a droid’s programming is difficult, this former First Order droid is up to the challenge of making up for his past.

“Customized”

This set retailed exclusively at Target for $9.99.
