Whoa! This week we were hit by a tidal wave of new Star Wars media and announcements. The avalanche began with the 45 second (and $7.5 million) Solo: A Star Wars Story teaser. This was followed up the next day with a longer teaser trailer on Good Morning America.
These teasers were as accompanied by a set of four character posters.
Now as awesome as Solo is gearing up to be, the week didn’t end there. On Tuesday, The Star Wars Show dropped a special episode announcing that Game of Thrones producers /writers David Benioff & DB Weiss will be making a new series of Star Wars films.
As many online began to digest these new movies, the phrase new trilogy was being used until Star Wars Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo shot down the use of the word ‘trilogy’ on his Twitter.
And yet the fun didn’t end there. Bob Iger on a Disney earnings call, let investors know that there will be “few” new Star Wars series coming to Disney’s new streaming platform set to launch late next year. Whether or not this includes the live-action series announced last year, is still unknown.
Reaction to all this news felt a bit overwhelming and “fan fatigue’ started to make its round on the interwebs. While this does feel like a lot, upon closer reflection, this is pretty normal for the Star Wars franchise. Now when most older fans think of Star Wars they remember times when movies had a three gap between their releases. And now with a pace of one movie every year, many fans feel it is too much too fast.
While the pace is much faster than previous eras of Star Wars, it is light years behind what Disney is doing with their Marvel Studios franchises. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has released 17 movies in the past 10 years (as well as three more later this year) in addition to nine television series (with more on the way) and yet fan fatigue is nowhere to be seen. It is clear this model is both successful and one that Disney is trying to replicate with the Star Wars brand.
Now whether you believe the amount of upcoming content is too overwhelming or not yet enough to fill your fandom, we’ll have you look at what has already come before. Because when you look at the content that has been officially approved and/or produced by Lucasfilm, whether you have noticed it all or not, you realize there has been a massive amount of media released in the last 10 years. The content increase began when Uncle George was still in charge and Kathleen Kennedy has simply kept the pace The Maker handed-off to her and Lucasfilm.
